This Week

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

It’s been a pretty average week really.
I have had a few good days at big bay and lately been up the cable again, this week I managed to build up the courage for a double S-bend off the corner so I have them down now. With the kite I have been learning some weird tweaked shifty stuff and also a few thing from Towside. The little wave kickers have been so much fun, the grab 3’s that are possible are amazing and thats been great, it’s just really cool to ride these conditions because so many weird different moves are possible as you are usuing body momentum rather than always pulling against your kite.
Today was pretty good as well, had a nice session on my binding to try something different, mostly just trying all types of grab 3’s and stuff - blind, after that I took my straps and landed a KL S-bend 3, the winds in for a while now so hopefully it’ll be a good week.
Sorry there are no pictures but I’m having a few problems at the minute, will get some stuff up when I can.

Cape Towns been pretty good since I arrived, I got Ruben and some friends from the airport about a week ago now.
The wind has been blowing strong lately, our first day riding together was the hugest MegaLoop session of my life, it was so windy I could barely stand on the beach, we covered so much distance in just one jump, I reckon I saw Ruben about 15 meters up with his kite level, insane.
Cable has also been good, we have been a couple of times cause the wind has eased off for a few days, I have finally got the corner cut right after all this time and landed a Blind Judge 3, S-Bend-Blind and Back-Blind airpass yesterday.
We were at Langabaan over the weekend too, there was a local comp up there so thought we should check it out and meet up with a few friends we hadn’t seen for a while.
Probably going to hit the cable again later and think the winds back soon so we’re going to try and film a bit and release some footage, let see how it goes.

Malaysia

ist2_2481574_malaysia_flag_icon.jpgEarlier this year I was invited along to Malaysia to demo Kitesurfing and help grow Chiemsee in that part of the world.
Since Traveling for Kiting I have had never been to this area so it was bound to be a pretty new and exciting trip.

It started by flying into Kuala Lumpur, that evening I stayed in the City Center then next morning it was back the airport for a short flight over to the East coast to demo our sport at the Monsoon Cup which was the last stage of the sailing World Cup.

Not long after arriving it was straight to the media, a press conference was held and I did a short demo after so people could get an idea of what was going on.
The conference was pretty big and pro, I had never really done something like that before, it was nerve-racking at first but a good experience.

Kitesurfing is well unknown in Malaysia so it was funny to see everybody’s reaction, I was riding in a river mouth with an island dividing it into 2, the whole structure was built on the waters edge and crowds of people came out on to the balconies to see what was going on.

Next day there was no wind so there was no way to get out on the water, the magnitude of the event was amazing though, the king opened the competition, the Navy brought these amazing trophies in by ship, whole floors were allocated for on site editing and live TV and the amount of people was immense considering it’s location.

Next morning I was back in Kuala Lumpur, Chiemsee have 5 shop dotted around the country so we took a trip to one of the main one’s which was in a HUGE mall and probably the best one I have ever been to.
Through out the day I was interviewed by some of the biggest papers and magazines including FHM.

As well as the guys from Chiemsee I was also accompanied by some people from a PR agency so it always looked pretty Pro when I rocked up to interviews. The following morning I appeared on a breakfast TV show on one of the biggest free-view channels in country, I thought I would be well nervous but the show was fun and the presenters were cool and it all went pretty well. Later there was another interview for a large Chinese mag and then I was done.

The weekend was also well fun, some of the people who had helped through the week took me out to really see the city, we went to KLCC which is these 2 massive twin towers that are 2 of the highest in the world. You can only get to the 41st floor, which was pretty high and looked over the city but that wasn’t even half way.
We also went to Central mall and China town, which was mental, I never been to somewhere so hectic but it was really good fun and amazing to see.

I ended up having a well fun time and got a great experience the country, the food is amazing bye the way, also I’d like to thank everyone who helped me through out the trip and I look forward to coming back.

The potential for kiting is pretty good so hopefully I’ll be back next year.
