Mambo

mambobumpersticker.jpg Our drive up to Merimbula where the Mambo Classic was going to be held took about 6-7 hours, really it could have been way quicker but the speed limits are ridiculously slow in Oz. We came up in the Flexi Transporter which was fitted out with a monitor and PS2 so I got to kill the time with Guitar Hero most of the way.

Anyways arriving at the event the wind wasn’t looking so good, we got there in the afternoon but it wasn’t really hopeful so most people were packing up and getting ready for the pub.

Next day was also light, I got out for about 15 minutes on a 16.5 and a skim board, the wind was on shore so it was pretty hectic with people but it was nice to see everybody so enthusiastic and making the most of it.

The following day was well promising, it was great weather and the wind was blowing side shore, I took a 13 but it was only just enough to stay up wind and make the odd few jumps, again I was only out for about 15-20 minutes but I managed to have a pretty good time. The kickers were good and I managed to get loads of sick flat 3’s, (which it one of my favorite moves) probably the best trick I got was a Melan grab (which is a grab with your front hand, around your front leg between your feet, on your heelside edge, with your front leg tweak out) with a frontside 3, landing wrapped, then wrapping the bar over my head. Confusing hey!!! I will try to get a clip out at some point when I am back in SA, the conditions are perfect for that trick there.

Meanwhile you can check this out if you want to know all about grabs

The final day was just like the second, this time I didn’t hit the water. That evening it was prize giving which was hilarious and crazy, they pulled a few of us up on stage, who turned out to be the top places of each category and put make-up on us to look like a bleeding skull, then they made us dance around like idiots and who ever done best was crowned king Mambo, I couldn’t handle it, it was so embarrassing but a good crack and I’m sure pretty entertaining for the others. It was so funny.

All in all the event was good fun, I had a epic time and met some great people, everybody there was crazy.
It was just nice to be at an event like this where everybody is enthusiastic, having fun and not taking it too seriously, everybody is just there to show there riding.

Melbourne

2007art.jpgI got to Melbourne yesterday afternoon and headed straight to St. Kilda which is just outside Melbourne CBD.

Turning up it was pretty cool, there were quite a few people there and a local paper had come down for an interview.
As we arrived the wind actually dropped, we hung around a bit and I signed a few thing and chatted to a few locals, about 30 minutes later a front came through and it immediately turned to 9m wind. I rigged up and hit the water.

The session was pretty good, it was strong at first then gradually got less, there was quite an audience on the beach and it was funny to hear some cheers as I landed my tricks.
There was fun group of people on the beach and it was also cool just to hang out.

Today the weather is pretty grotty but tomorrow morning we are off to The Mambo Event in Merimbula which is around half way to Sydney.
Should be fun!

Also I woke up this morning and I was in ‘The Age’ the paper, the 3rd one along was half page on the 2nd page so that was pretty cool.
Below are a few other pictures below that Jason South also took.

I arrived in Perth from CT on the 16th for a Flexifoil demo tour of Oz along with Team Manager Jason who is always a good laugh. I had been there before for a month at the end of 04 but I was looking forward to coming back.

On our first day the wind was on, after visiting a few shops and settling in we hit Woodman’s Point which is probably one of the better freestyle spots in WA.
I had also just received my new kites, The Hadlow Pro Model, so that was pretty exciting, they look sick and I couldn’t be happier with them.

1340647.jpg

The session was pretty epic, the kites were amazing and there was a good group of people down at the beach trying some kites and getting involved on the water.
It was cool to shoot with Toby Bromwich and also get the chance to work with Andy Gordon who both followed us on the rest of our trip whilst there.

The next day was not so windy but on the following day we headed down to Margaret River to check some spots in the area and try to ride main break, unfortunately the wind was a different direction and not so strong so we had to wait until the following day to get some action.

Next morning we were up and out early, at first there was a major downpour but it soon cleared up to be an epic day, it was still on shore but blowing mental, I took a 7 and did a few moves but mainly had fun with MegaLoops and Hooked Mega Loops - HP.

Later we headed back up to Perth but on the way stop at a river about a hour South of the city. It was a crazy spot that had dead flat water but not because it was sheltered but because there was so much seaweed in the water.
It was practically mirror flat and also shallow, we managed to get some great pictures and footage from the water and I had a pretty decent session for my 7m.

After that we headed up to Perth then flew out the next morning, now I am in Melbourne to check out a few shops, chill for a bit and get ready to drive up to the Mambo event which sounds like it’s going to be fun.

Lets see how it goes.

South Africa

images.jpg I have been in Cape Town for almost a week now. The season still hasn’t kicked in and I haven’t seen the usual SE wind’s since I arrived.
On the first day I got to kite it was NW, rainy and 7m MegaLoop weather, unfortunately I done something to my ICB, or something like that, in my knee so I haven’t kited since, it’s feeling good again now though so hopefully I’ll be back in action soon.
It’s been great to back and just be in South Africa, nothing much has changed and its been fun just to be in this countries way of life.
In a few days I am off to Oz, I am off to Perth first for a few days but then heading on to the East coast, I’ll be back in CT again in December.
